Few people in the history of Freestyle have had as profound of an impact as John Houck. In the 1980’s he was the consummate freestyler. His high execution, perfect form and technical prowess put him in elite company. But his impact as a mentor for such up-and-coming freestylers such as Gina Sample, Bob Coleman, Dave Schiller, Rene Pardo, and dozens of Junior players enhance his legacy. John also made a mark as a choreographer. His ability to identify and showcase his partner’s skills, mold them into the framework of a routine, and synchronize them with musical modes are legendary. His achievements in promoting the sport include tournament director for 15 Texas State Flying Disc Championships, and announcer for the sport’s biggest events. He emceed the US Open tournaments in La Mirada, CA, numerous FPA and WFDF World Championships, and the National Frisbee Festival in Washington, DC. His hundreds of demonstrations presented Freestyle to new audiences all around the country. And this is only his Freestyle experience. John also promotes disc golf through his events and course designs, which rank among the top courses in the US and Canada. His importance as not only a Freestyler, but as a Frisbee legend cannot be overstated. We are forever in his debt.
