Dear FPA members and jammers interested in FPAW,
The results of the survey about the FPAW Championships in Israel were unfortunately not very encouraging. In accordance with Ayal and Oren (tournament directors) it has been decided to cancel the event in Tel Aviv.
But as we know, most players would like an FPAW after a 2-year break, and the FPA board wants it too.
Luckily for our community, Francesco Santolin from Milano showed great interest and willingness to host this year’s edition.
The “Coppa Città di Milano”, Italy’s historical overall flying disc event, was already set to be hosted at the Frisbee Temple in September.
Despite such short notice, we’re very happy to announce that FPAW 2022 will be hosted in accordance with the overall tournament in Milan, from September the 21st to 24th.
This was a very hard decision for the Israjammers since they put so much work and energy into it already.
This is a message from them for the community:
” Hello all,
First, we would like to thank FPA for the support and everyone who found a moment to fill out the form.
It is clear to us that the situation makes it difficult for making decisions and we do not criticize the answers we received nor those who could not participate in the survey or who preferred not to give answers.
Regarding numbers – so far about 50 players from around the world have filled out the form. Unfortunately, the results showed that there is not enough response and “commitment”. Many showed support for our courage and stressed that they would be happy to come, but due to the situation and the uncertainty they were forced to say no.
For the question about arriving in Israel for the event – only 10 answered that they would come, in addition to 6 who “will do their best” and 8 who “hope so”.
For participation in the competition – 20 answered that they would participate and 5 said that maybe. In addition, we would estimate the participation of another 15 Israeli jams (who are not included in the numbers). Unfortunately, these numbers are not very good for hosting a major event.
After many realistic thoughts and discussions with the FPA, with a sore heart, we decided unanimously that the most responsible and right thing to do is to cancel FPAW 2022 in Israel.
Although the FPA has generously allowed us to postpone the project to next year, we choose to release the bid and move the baton to the next country in line.
We believe this would be the best for the community and for the event.
On a personal note, you can probably imagine how painful the decision is for us. Our efforts to run the project over the last two years have been very exhausting both emotionally and physically.
In the future, when things look different, we may present a different bid, time will tell.
Hosting FPAW in Israel has been a dream of almost 20 years. We hope that this little bump in the road will not prevent us from fulfilling it in the way we imagined.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank The Israeli Flying Disc Association for the tremendous support and the collaboration with Tel Aviv’s Sports Department during the project.
And of course, huge thanks go to FPA and all of you, the global freestyle community, for believing in us.
We hope to celebrate together in Israel in better times.
The Milan crew is already fired up. Here’s a short message from Francesco, more information will be announced soon:
” Frisbee Temple Is so hyped to host the FPAW! That’s the best opportunity for us to make it shine. We are already running hard to put up our best hospitality and make you feel at home.
The original Coppa Città di Milano Is not only about freestyle and you are all welcome to join the overall competition. It’s going to be an incredible week of happiness, sharing, and flying objects!! Get ready and don’t miss it!!
We’re fired up as well, let’s finally have a world championship together!
